Being that the main cause behind a nasolabial fold is the sagging of the mid-face, in other words of a mechanical nature, a cream cannot help. Lifting the mid-face through an operative face lift would treat the root cause and smoothen the face the most. A cream can only provide skin care but cannot fill out the deep grooves or folds. However, a non-operative wrinkle treatment is an injection treatment of the nasolabial fold with hyaluronic acid filler. In contrast to an anti-wrinkle cream, a lifting and stabilizing effect can be achieved with a deep injection to the sub-skin tissue.
By injecting the nasolabial fold with hyaluronic acid-based filler the facial grooves or folds are padded, inhibiting the wrinkles’ progress and simultaneously stabilizing the strained mimic points. The face appears smoother, softer and less haggard. When treating this wrinkle one should also take padding the cheeks into consideration and/or treating the mouth area to achieve more aesthetic harmony.
Particularly long nasolabial folds are called gastric folds or worry lines. In this context, the nasolabial fold increases especially after weight loss and the subsequent reduction of facial fatty tissue. In earlier times, weight loss was often connected to stomach ailments which therefore led to the name gastric folds.
Depending on the product, the amount and the injection technique used when treating the nasolabial fold, a long-term effect can be achieved. Despite the stabilizing effects the injected hyaluronic acid-based filler may have, it completely breaks down after approximately nine months. However, independent of the filler used, the growth of new collagen fibers are stimulated at the site of injection so that a part of the injected volume actually permanently remains.Taking into consideration the changes to ones face with increasing age and depending on the initial formation of wrinkles, several hyaluronic filler treatments at relatively short intervals can be performed (four to eight weeks), and thereafter at longer intervals. Tissue defects are smoothed out with a filler deep into the fatty sub-skin tissue. Generally speaking, the deeper the injection the more indirect the effect is on the treated wrinkle. Decisive lines in the skin are generally treated closer to the surface where hydration of the skin with hyaluronic acid-based filler is a substantial argument for stabilization.
This wrinkle treatment should be performed on the patient using an anesthetic ointment so that it is relatively pain-free. Conventionally sharp injection needles or special dull cannulae can be used.
