Along the outer edge of the eye cavity lays the ring muscle under the surface of the skin. This ring muscle (Musculus orbicularis) makes it possible to close your eyes. The continuous tension around the eyes caused by the ring muscle can lead to a lowering of the eyebrows. Hyperactivity can additionally create crow’s feet at the sides of the eyes.

By weakening the musculus orbicularis with botulinum toxin, the ring-formed fibers contract less thereby often giving the face a more relaxed appearance. When in a relaxed state, the eyes also squint less, thus lifting the eyebrows. This is called a brow lift with botulinum toxin.

Additionally, the pull of the frontal or brow muscle, which generally draws the eyebrows upwards, can be reduced by weakening the central outer eyebrow. This lifts the outer edges of the eyebrows. However, lifting the eyebrows in this manner must be managed carefully, otherwise the outer eyebrows will result in “Spock eyes.” Spock eyes look very unnatural – somewhat like a startled squirrel.
How great can the effect be? The eyebrows can raise from one to three millimeters. The effect is discrete, enlarges the eyes and gives the face a more rested and alert appearance.
